Electronic Arts (EA) founder Trip Hawkins conceived the series and approached Madden (the game is called MADDEN after John Earl Madden, a former coach who won a Super Bowl as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, and after retiring from training he became a well-known commentator for NFL broadcasts) in 1984 to gain his endorsement and experience.
