To Premiere at the Miami Film Festival Poetry City – a Cinematic Love Letter to Miami’s Literary Soul

The screening will take place on Saturday, April 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Koubek Center.

Directed by Aaron Glickman, Poetry City offers an intimate and sweeping exploration of Miami-Dade County’s vibrant literary landscape. In Poetry City, the film, and the title of Oscar Fuente’s, also known as the Biscayne Poet, newest collection, Fuentes serves as a guide into a community that is often overshadowed by parties, loud music and bright lights to reveal a bubbling underside of ideas and meaning. For thirty years Fuentes, with his manual typewriter, has been seen all over town writing poems that capture Miami in words and rhythm, and that offer insight and illumination into the city beyond its perceived glamor.

Poetry City, the  film captures a multi-faceted view of Miami’s poetry scene.

From intimate interviews, readings and performances by several of Miami’s poets-  Caridad Moro-Gronlier, 2024-25 Miami-Dade County Poet Laureate; Richard Blanco, Miami-Dade County first Poet Laureate and Presidential Inaugural Poet; Mitchell Kaplan, owner, Books & Books and co-founder with Dr. Eduardo Padrón of Miami Book Fair; Nicole Tallman, Miami-Dade County Poetry Ambassador; Campbell McGrath, Pulitzer Prize finalist and MacArthur Fellow; performance and spoken word artists Arsimmer McCoy and Darius Daughtry, among many others- the film also captures the coning together of poets at a community-wide photoshoot, a vivid conversation between poets, a celebration The Ode to the Zip Code,

among other gatherings with the word:

Miami’s Poets – Caught on Camera Gathered together at YoungArts campus Miami’s social photographer Manny Hernandez captured a cross-generation of Miami’s poets.

Civic Leadership and Artistic Expression in Conversation between Nicole Tallman, Geoffrey Philp, and Oscar Fuentes at the FIU Maurice A. Ferré Poetry and Leadership Conference. Readings by Tallman, Philp and Fuentes, accompanied by his jazz trio.

Odes to the (Zip) Code O, Miami Poetry Festival and WLRN-FM invited poets across Miami-Dade County to write and submit a 5 line poem – a haiku- about Miami and what inspires them about living in Miami. Poets were instructed to use the 5 line structure of one of the County’s zip codes. The Zip Ode finale took place at Vizcaya House and Gardens, with Biscayne Bay at its backdrop.

Miami’s History in Poetry – Comes Together Miami’s poets took the stage at Miami Book Fair 2025, the nation’s largest gathering of readers and writers of all ages, to share works that represented a wide swath of Miami’s history.

Said Aaron Glickman,  “Miami is a city famously defined by its surface—neon lights, high-rise silhouettes, and a relentless pursuit of thefashionable. But as a filmmaker rooted here, I’ve always been fascinated by what survives beneath that glitz. Poetry City is my attempt to capture a metropolis that is still finding its voice.”

Poetry City, a film by Aaron Glickman. Executive Producer Lisa B. Palley and producers Meme Ferré and Alec Jerome Kreisberg.
